Tanker truck flips- spill closes US 59 in Houston

October 27, 2010

An 18-wheeler tanker truck lost its load when it flipped over on Highway 59 outside Houston recently. The truck accident shut down a good portion of the highway while crews worked to clean up the roadway.

Police did not indicate what caused the 18 wheel or accident although many truck rollovers relate to jackknife situations with top-heavy rigs. The truck accident occurred Monday about 10 PM close to the 59 spur outside of Rosenberg, Texas.

Another cause of a big rig rollover is taking a curve at a speed higher than the truck can handle with its load. Generally, the truck leans due to centrifugal force acting through the truck's center of gravity.

Frequently, a truck rollover not involving a jackknife will occur at exit and entrance ramps of highways due to the truck driver misjudging that the sharpness of the curve and entering the ramp at and entering the ramp and an excessive rate of speed.

There are many other factors that are typical in single truck rollovers including inexperienced drivers, load issues, drifting off the roadway and being unfamiliar with the rig being driven.
